Aucun programme théorique, mais un inexplicable désir de saisir la réalité et de maîtriser la sensation, tout en en donnant l'expression la plus pure. Tel était le mot d'ordre de Die Brücke - et de la sensibilité expressionniste - selon l'un de ses adeptes, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. L'expressionnisme allemand, qui vint ébranler l'académisme triomphant sous le règne de Guillaume II, entre 1900 et 1914, fut une période d'intense créativité et l'un des temps forts de la modernité, au même titre que le cubisme et le surréalisme. Sa définition de l'espace et, surtout, sa conception de la couleur, exercèrent une profonde influence sur l'art européen de la première moitié du siècle. Il reste néanmoins largement méconnu. Retraçant l'histoire de ce mouvement extraordinairement fécond, Wolf-Dieter Dube en restitue pour le lecteur contemporain toute la violence et les exigences à travers une série de courtes biographies, fondant son propos en particulier sur les témoignages d'époque et les écrits des artistes eux-mêmes.
